Miata Air Flow Meter

The NA model (which is what our 1990 is) uses an air flow meter and not a mass air flow meter. Most cars have MAF while the early Miata has an AFM.

So what’s the difference?

A MAF sensor has a thin wire that’s is used by the  ecm to determine the amount of air going into the engine which in turn determines the amount of fuel it adds to the mixture.

An AFM uses a flapper that is in the air flow’s path to do the same thing basically.

One thing to keep in mind is if the AFM sticks closed the car will quit. The ecm cuts the fuel pump off if it doesn’t see the AFM showing air flow.
